HOWTO: Open Office 2007 .docx file in OpenOffice.org

I often get docx documents from my friends and each time i had to find a PC with office 2007 to convert it to doc file. it was frustrating. so here is the solution i found in ubuntu forum to open docx file in ubuntu.

1. First install alien either using synaptic or apt-get.*

2. Download the file odf-converter-1.0.0-5.i586.rpm from here. Save it to your home folder.

3. then execute this command in terminal

Code:

alien -ct odf-converter-1.0.0-5.i586.rpm

4. Now extract generated file odf-converter-1.0.0.tgz. Go to the extracted directory using terminal.

5. Copy three files into your OpenOffice.org directories — note that the usr that you’re copying from is a directory that was inside the tgz file.

Code:

sudo cp usr/lib/ooo-2.0/program/OdfConverter

/usr/lib/openoffice/program/

sudo cp /usr/lib/ooo-2.0/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice

/TypeDetection/Filter/MOOXFilter_cpp.xcu /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice

/TypeDetection/Filter/

sudo cp usr/lib/ooo-2.0/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice

/TypeDetection/Types/MOOXTypeDetection.xcu /usr/lib/openoffice/share/registry/modules/org/openoffice

/TypeDetection/Types/

Now you can open docx file….

note:
*alien is the tool to convert RPM packages to DEB packages.

  1. It works. Thanks for the info.
I have also made a new tar.gz which I have used to easily deploy this over our office network.

  2. Doesn’t work for me. All the three files are copied into the correct locations. Still when I fire-up OO2.3 writer in my linux mint laptop, and ask it to open a docx file, it shows me a ‘Filter Selection’ dialog box. MS Word 2007 doesn’t appear there as a choice. Selecting MS Word XP et. al. says ‘Error reading file’. Is there any check/tweak I can do?

    Thanks in advance

  4. With the new Office (the 2007) design, look & feel, Microsoft have made a giant leap. True that it takes time to get use to the new ribbon and to get around quickly.. But once you are familiar with it, you rock!

We do a lot of researches on the web, and using Excel macros,
we have improved our research speed in 30%. That huge!!

Using OneNote have improved our research information control (nothing get lost now) and with the sharing files abilities, now everyone can contribute to the project.

So to summary it all, we are more then happy with the tools that comes in the Office 2007.
We looking forward to the new one… 😉

With the SP2 support for open source files,
our CRM improved since we don’t have to “fight”
    with our clients anymore 🙂

The 2007 was a great investment with benefits to us.
