webex in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

Webex is the a nice tool to have remote meetings and remote administration. Even though it is too much costly, we dont have other alternates that works in linux and windows.

One of the things, I enjoy a lot in office is solving the issues through the webex sessions.
It was working in my ubuntu 9.04 well. Days went. I upgraded to 9.10.
Had much issues with webex.
struggled a lot to configure it in ubuntu.

Now, ubuntu 10.04 came and had the same issues.
But, found a solution for this.

it seems that Java from Sun is not installed by default, and Ubuntu has OpenJDK & IcedTea as the default Java plugin in Firefox. AND WebEx don’t play nice with IcedTea.

sudo apt-get remove icedtea6-plugin
sudo add-apt-repository “deb http://archive.canonical.com/ lucid partner”
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install sun-java6-jdk
sudo update-alternatives –config java
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-plugin

Wow.
After doing these steps, Webex is working fine for me.

Thanks for Edward for his original post.

  1. Yes,

    Teamviewer is available in linux…

It is the Best alternate to webex…

    It is free..

    It works well in linux…

  2. There are many alternatives. Some are free with restrictions and some are completely free.
If you want something basic, then Yugma works without issues. It’s basic membership is free and I think it supports 15 people.
Then there is my personal favorite, webhuddle. It’s a nice, small lite utility to share desktop and conduct meetings. I like it because it works in web browser as long as you have JRE installed for the browser 🙂

  3. My friend (a recent Linux convert) has webex for Windows, have managed to install it for him on Linux Mint (Ubuntu base) using Wine. The viewer works fine, but the recorder won’t open. I get the icon in the panel but it’s useless, just sits there, neither left nor right clicks work on it. Now he needs to use the recorder for his training sessions for the benefit of his students. I read Benjamin’s reply mentioning teamviewer, but does it also work as a recorder? Any other alternatives if not? Thanks in advance.

  4. From passion are you on WordPress? I have been told its a great platform yet merely attempting to obtain some functional guidance
on the downsides as I am not really technological

  5. I’m still trying to find a aluminum side table, have thought about ordering one manufactured however don’t want to shell
out thousands just for a little table
