Announcing Sofware Freedom Day celebrations by ILUGC

Indian Linux User Group – Chennai is proud to announce Software Freedom Day(SFD) on Saturday September 18 2010!

SFD is a global initiative to celebrate and give back to the community by taking Free and Open Source software to the streets! The purpose of Software Freedom Day is to raise awareness among the students, professionals, policy makers, and general public.

Indian Linux Users Group – Chennai will mark this event by hosting a discussion/exhibition on
Sat Sept 18th from 9:30am to 5pm at Birla Planetarium, Kotturpuram, Chennai.

This event is open to the public and entry is free. Anyone interested to know about Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) can attend this event. In this event, ILUGC members and students from various colleges, will demonstrate the FOSS software, give tutorials (in Tamil and English) to cover the common tools like Office, Internet, Multimedia, Games, Programming etc., and a session to show “How to install Linux in your computer?”.

Free and Open Source software, refers to software which allows freedom of use and freedom to change and distribute the software without any infringement of copyrights. Most of the FOSS also happens to be free of cost, and the FOSS licensing model offers developing countries like India an alternative to expensive proprietary licensing models which limit the ability of the customers/users to change, upgrade and modify the programmes. There is a range of free and open source software available for different purposes, from Mozilla Firefox for browsing the Internet to the GNU/Linux Operating System, and the Open Office productivity application, Games, Multimedia and Education tools at no cost.

The growth in the use of FOSS also helps to stimulate the local IT sector since it gives IT entrepreneurs a chance to explore the structure of programmes, and to develop solutions which could be affordable to users.
